Areas of Special Clinical Interest & Training

I have two particular clinical focus areas, in which I have a dedicated interest in learning, practicing, training, supervising and consulting:

These days, most of my therapeutic work is with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex or asexual (LGBTQIA+) individuals of all ages, as well as their partners, family members, schools, religious places, or workplaces. I also supervise, train and consult in this area. You can read about my work with LGBTQIA+ people and communities here.

I have also had a longstanding passion for helping people managing binge and emotional eating, people who struggle to control their weight, and people considering surgery for weight management. My PhD investigated the psychology of eating and having a high BMI, and I’ve presented my findings at a number of national and international conferences and continue to see clients, supervise clinicians, and attend professional development specific to this topic. You can read more about my experiences with eating and weight management here.

General Clinical Experience & Interest

Long before I was a clinical psychologist with two therapeutic and academic focus areas, I was a counsellor and generalist psychologist assisting people from all walks of life with a broad range of issues. As a result, I now have over 20 years of rewarding experience working therapeutically with children, young people, couples, families, and groups in a variety of community, hospital, and private practice settings.

Over this period I have accumulated the most experience assisting with:

  • Depression and other mood disorders (such as Bipolar Mood Disorder)
  • Anxiety (including panic attacks, generalised anxiety, phobias)
  • Problems with managing emotions (including anger)
  • Recovery from trauma (including PSTD and complex trauma)
  • Identifying, connecting with, processing, and expressing emotions
  • Managing chronic and persistent pain
  • Managing issues that arise from cultural identity or spirituality
  • Assertiveness and setting boundaries and limits
  • Recovery from addiction
  • Self-harm and suicide prevention
  • Uncertainty with life goals and direction, and
  • Relationship problems (including polyamorous and non-traditional relationships).

Additional Training & Accreditation

In addition to the solid CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) skills most psychologists acquire through their postgraduate clinical training and beyond, I have chosen to complete advanced/intensive professional development training in the following therapies and clinical skills:

  • Compassion Focussed Therapy
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Schema Therapy
  • Clinical Hypnosis
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy

Experiences as a Supervisor, Trainer & Consultant

In addition to working with clients directly, I have two other professional loves: supervising psychologists and other practitioners whether in person, via video conferencing, or in small groups; and bringing my clinical skills and experience to professional and community groups through training and consultancy work.
